The schematic of the test bench dedicated to the analysis of biomass fuelled gasifiers is provided in the Figure
A pre-treatment area is available for biomass analysis (PARR calorimeter with auxiliary instruments), as well as an analysis area with Agilent portable GC and a Thermo ICP.
The gasifier itself, entirely designed by the Macchine Tor Vergata group, is a fluidized bed type, whose power is in the range of 80 kW_th, see Figure below. It is equipped with several probes for temperature measurements and/or gas sampling over the bed and in the freeboard, and with fuel and bed material supply systems.
Cold flow data have been gathered to verify the regime of the fluidized bed gasifier by varying sand particle diameter and temperature. Data have also been interpreted with a CFD code based on MFIX
Under reacting conditions the gasifier has shown an almost homogeneous and stable temperature profile over the board, with a decreasing pattern over the freeboard.

Measured Cold Gas Effiiciencies are in the range of 40%.
